Almáchar lies 26 km from Malaga and 14 km from Vélez-Malaga. At an altitude of 250 m, this very pretty village has a population of 2.200.
Almáchar is an Arabic name meaning meadows. The village church of San Mateo is from the 16th century and combines Gothic, Renaissance and Mudéjar architecture with two internal Baroque alcoves. Interesting is the tower of Mudéjar style.
Surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and cereals, the municipality of Almáchar stretches its lands by the bowl of the river Almáchar, from the Almáchar low ridge (334m) to the Vallejo peak (609m) to the south. Some farmhouses stand out on hillsides where the grapes are laid out to dry on distinctive raisin beds, later to be turned into raisins. Farm land by the river banks ascends in vegetable patches, citrus and fruit groves up to the edge of the town. The best panoramas are seen from the town square looking towards the nearby village of El Borge.
Throughout the village, on many street corners, tiles are mounted on the walls of the buildings pointing the way to various places of interest including a cave and the raisin museum. The museum shows the way of life over the past five hundred years and tries to keep alive some of the old customs and traditions of country life in this area.
The legend relates that under one of the town’s fountains, near the river Almáchar, there is a cave where the Moors buried an important treasure before they were expelled. There is another legend that relates that the Patron of the Green Sash or Mercy saved some sailors, who were shipwrecked in front of the coasts of Málaga.
On the first Sunday of May they celebrate the Day of the Patron of the Green Sash. In summertime, between July, 29th and 31st, they celebrate a mass in honor of the God’s Mother of Shelter. In the beginning of September starts the annual celebration of 'Ajoblanco', the party of white garlic.
You can enjoy the typical mountain village life style. People is really friendly and tourists are always very welcome to this little town.
Some bars and shops take care of the daily need of the village and its surroundings. For bigger shopping tours, visits of restaurants and entertainment it is better to drive to the nearby Vélez-Málaga or Torre del Mar, which is only a stone’s throw from there.
