Its municipality lies on the
easternmost place of the region, on the border to the province of Granada. In the last foothills of the mountain range Almijara the rivers Chillar and de la Miel have its source, which irrigate the fields of Nerja.

Because of the soft climate you can enjoy the charm of the village all the year long. The steep coasts, inlets and capes of its coast as well as the village, which has kept the atmosphere of its
Moorish past, attracted many visitors and artists, who have found the merits in Nerja to make it to their permanent summer residence. Here you still find rest and relaxation.

Nerja, nearby the village Maro. They discovered cave paintings and other rests of the older Stone Age, which are approx. 30.000 years old. To the natural charm of the stalactites and stalagmites of the eight halls
of this cave is added the adaptation of light and sound, which they took for the reception of visitors. Besides every summer they give music and dance festivals inside this third most attended object of interest of
Spain.

Although the inner city of Nerjas keeps the traditional style of an Andalusian village, it is of recent date because of the earthquake of 1884, which affected to important districts of the
Axarquía. The historic center starts on the ”Balcony of Europe”, a former castle of the 9th century, today a platform on a steep rock offering marvellous panoramic views over the sea. The chapel Nuestra
Sra. de las Angustinas with frescos of the master Alonso Cano and the church El Salvador of the 17th century in baroque-mudéjar style complete the catalogue of the different buildings of historic
interest.
